Nano Solar panels are some of the latest and highest efficiency panels on the market of solar panels. These products have a much higher level of efficiency – around 20% - than standard silicon products used in solar cells. The standard photovoltaic cell generates electricity through the impact of certain wavelengths of light hitting their surface. These products operate the same way, but with much higher yields of electricity. Silicon cells are much more delicate and require extensive housing of to protect them from damage caused by possible impacts or moisture. Nanosolar has produced cells that are constructed from a thin film of photovoltaic cells, which are more durable and lighter in terms of the cells themselves and their housing construction as well.
The chief aim of this companies products is to lower the cost of photovoltaic cells so that they can be used more widely by companies, power suppliers, and homeowners as well. They plan to cell these products for close to $1 per watt, which is one fifth of the cost of silicon cells. Additionally, the company plans to lower this cost even further at $.36 per watt, although this figure is hotly debated and may not be technically feasible in the foreseeable future.
Additionally, silicon-based producers of this technology have heavily criticized the type of technology in use for their solar cells –thin film models – but this is much to be expected from competitors. Nonetheless, it’s still unclear what type of application will best suit silicon versus thin film models. Until then, this company will remain a constant innovator.
